The flathead grey mullet is a diurnal coastal species and has a wide geographical distribution, so that it lives in bays and estuaries of freshwater and brackish water rivers in tropical and subtropical regions. The flathead grey mullet with its ability to tolerate the wide range of salinity and water temperature, detritivorous feeding behavior, good growth rate, good feed conversion ratio and excellent marketability is currently considered as one of the most important species for aquaculture worldwide. It is also a good candidate for the development of aquaculture in saline and non - arable lands in coastal areas and inland desert areas of the country using surface saline water, unconventional water and groundwater. The feeding behavior of this species has led to its successful farming in freshwater and saltwater ponds as a single species or in combination with other species of fish and shrimp. The behavior of this fish in nature is so intelligent that it is rarely caught with the still – fishing method. For this reason, it has no special place in the fishing basket of fishermen in the region. The catch statistics of this fish, along with all members of the mullet family Mugilidae, in the Oman Sea region do not reach a significant amount compared to other mullets. Also, due to its fast swimming behavior, the flathead grey mullet is a wild fish that is very difficult to catch brood fishes and transport live fish. Currently, most of the juveniles required for mullet farming operations especially in the eastern and southern regions of the Mediterranean Sea, the Saudi Arabia and the Persian Gulf as well as the Southeast Asian countries are collected from nature. In our country, fishing efforts continued from August 2008 to March 2009, which resulted in the domestication and transfer of 75 pre - breeders with an average weight of over 800 grams to the Inland Waters Aquatic Stocks Research Center - Gomishan Station in order to reproduce this fish. The results of fishing showed that from mid - September to mid - December each year, we can expect the fishing of the flathead grey mullet broodfish in Chabahar region. The fish were caught using suitable fishing gears (purse seine fishing boat) and transferred to the aquaculture workroom of the research center, where they were adapting and sanitary and quarantine methods were used for them. According to the existing demand from the Inland Waters Aquatic Stocks Research Center and fish and shrimp farms in the Golestan Province as well as the farms in the southern provinces for aquaculture, the plan to transfer a number of juveniles to the north of the country (Golestan province) and to develop broodstocks from juveniles collected in Chabahar is being pursued in coordination with the headquarters of the institute. The Iranian Fisheries Science and Research Institute has taken effective national measures in introducing this species with the focus on the Inland Waters Aquatic Stocks Research Center - Golestan Province and in cooperation with the Chabahar Offshore Fisheries Research Center. Considering that in the country, the coasts of Makran region have a comparative advantage for the reproduction and production of juvenile fish of this species. Therefore, provincial planning and support to achieve this and to develop aquaculture for this species seems necessary.
