The deputy director for research and technology of the Shrimp Research Institute of Iran - Bushehr said: This research patrol is conducted by a private sector vessel from the fishing community with the aim of assessing the status of shrimp resources and determining the appropriate time to open the shrimp season for four to five days. In an interview with IRNA on Wednesday, Dr. Khosrow Aein Jamshid added: This research patrol takes place at different time intervals from the Motaf area in the south to the Jazireh - ye Shomali in the north of Bushehr province in different depth layers including less than 10, 10 to 20 and 20 to 30 meters. He stated: In this research patrol, the status of shrimp resources in terms of size and weight is examined and the necessary information to determine the time to open the shrimp season is provided to the Fisheries Management Committee. Dr. Aein Jamshid added: The best conditions for shrimp fishery are when 70 % of the shrimp population reaches the size of 12 cm, which is a commercial size and is economically viable. He continued: Typically, 2 to 3 research patrols are carried out by the Shrimp Research Institute of Iran in the Bushehr province before the start of shrimp season. In the second stage, the pattern of expansion and depth in which the resource is located are determined. The deputy director for research and technology of the Shrimp Research Institute of Iran - Bushehr said: Due to the high cost of shrimp fishery, efforts are being made through conducting marine research patrols to help fishermen catch shrimp in densely populated areas in the shortest possible time. Dr. Aein Jamshid continued: Due to the fact that shrimp fishery is carried out in the form of bottom trawling, 12 to 15 percent of the total catch is the target species, and more than 85 percent are other commercial fish that have not reached commercial size including Otolithes ruber. However, these species can reach commercial size and be used as the broodstock to strengthen the aquatic stocks. He continued: Accordingly, when catching one kilogram of shrimp, 7 to 8 kilograms of fish are caught and discarded because they have not reached commercial size. In order not to harm other aquatic organisms, efforts are being made to identify densely populated areas of shrimp. Dr. Aein Jamshid mentioned: Also, to conserve shrimp stocks, when 80 % of the shrimp resources were harvested and 20 % of it remained, the end of the shrimp season is determined according to the report of research patrols. He emphasized: It is expected that the fishing community will not be active in shrimp fishery in other seasons when fishing is prohibited because with this action, they will destroy the resources that will create next year's population. The deputy director for research and technology of the Shrimp Research Institute of Iran continued: Also, due to the fact that shrimp move in herds, the action of some illegal fishermen who try to catch shrimp before the announcement of the legal time, causes the shrimp herds to disperse and this action increases the cost and time of shrimp fishery and causes great damage to the fishing community.
