Although rainbow trout is not one of the indigenous species of Iran, domestic farmers have been able to produce and supply more than 170,000 tons of fish to domestic and export markets last year and ranked first in the world in freshwater rainbow trout farming production. Continuation of this issue requires the supply of selectively bred eyed eggs as one of the main inputs of production. Domestic breeding centers have so far met a maximum of 40 % of domestic demand, with 60 % dependence on imported eyed eggs being a cause for concern in several ways. The imposition of sanctions and the problems associated with the transfer of currency and the difficulty in supplying it as well as the possibility of the introduction of various diseases through the import of eyed eggs are among the most important factors that have led researchers to think about the industry. The first step in this direction was the implementation of the plan to acquire and transfer the technical knowledge of producing Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) rainbow trout at the Coldwater Fishes Research Center of Tonekabon and the first phase was completed successfully. The second step in reducing dependence in the industry is the selective breeding of this fish and the emergence of a generation of rainbow trout that are not only unique in traits such as growth, sexual maturity and fertility, but also more resistant to disease. Inbreeding should also be avoided. The process of selective breeding of rainbow trout is underway by building some infrastructures at the Shahid Motahari Genetics and Breeding Research Center for Coldwater Fish - Yasuj. With the aim of improving the level of knowledge of the experts of the Iranian Fisheries Science and Research Institute, a meeting was held at the session hall of the institute in the presence of researchers, professors and fisheries project executors. After the exchange of views, the compilation of the knowledge package and the design of the selective breeding program in order to be presented to the minister of the Ministry of Agriculture Jihad were the output of the meeting. During the meeting, Dr. Bahmani, the director of the Iranian Fisheries Science and Research Institute, pointed out that it is necessary to reach a national conclusion on the selective breeding program for rainbow trout, and said: Information on this topic is available in various departments such as the Iranian Fisheries Science and Research Institute, universities, executive departments and the private sector, which must be put together properly like puzzle pieces. According to him, the minister of the Ministry of Agriculture Jihad has notified the necessary orders to the Agricultural Research Education and Extension Organization and the Iran Fisheries Organization to supply the eyed rainbow trout eggs needed by the country. He called on the two organizations to use all their scientific and technical capabilities to advance this important issue. Dr. Jorfi provided information about the Shahid Motahari Genetics and Breeding Research Center of Coldwater Fish - Yasuj and mentioned: So far, 120 brood fish and 8,000 juvenile rainbow trout have been transferred from the Coldwater Fishes Research Center of Tonekabon to the Shahid Motahari Genetics and Breeding Research Center of Coldwater Fish - Yasuj. She stated: Regular biometric audits, continuous monitoring of water, holding scientific meetings and training classes are among the activities that are carried out continuously. Regarding the activities of the Iran Fisheries Organization to improve the production of rainbow trout, Dr. Shakoori provided explanations and said: The establishment of the Fund for Supporting the Development of Eyed Egg Production is being pursued by the Iran Fisheries Organization, which hopes that this will be facilitated with the support of the Investment Fund. He believes: There are currently 34 active breeding centers in the country, producing a total of 170 million eyed eggs, which does not meet the domestic demand. Therefore, cooperation and synergy in order to solve the problem of the production of selectively bred eyed eggs is absolutely necessary. Dr. Sepahdari made some remarks about the macro project of Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) rainbow trout production in the country. He mentioned: The brood fish produced in this project are suitable for selective breeding. Dr. Rafiei and Dr. Farahmand, the professors of the Faculty of Natural Resources of the University of Tehran, Dr. Kalbasi, the vice chancellor for education at the Tarbiat Modares University, Dr. Hafezieh, deputy director for research and technology of the Iranian Fisheries Science and Research Institute, and Dr. Sharifian, the head of the aquaculture department of the institute, also expressed their views on the selective breeding program for rainbow trout. Dr. Bahmani emphasized that the research, university, executive and private sectors are linked together in a chain. He said: Although the task of research sector is to produce technical knowledge, this important thing is not performed alone and all above mentioned sectors must be together. At the end, he emphasized: It is necessary for all the four mentioned sectors to prepare their contents and finally to prepare a package of localized knowledge that is compatible with the internal conditions of the country, in the direction of the selective breeding program for rainbow trout. It should be noted that it was decided that the Iranian Fisheries Science and Research Institute should provide the members with the initial version of the selective breeding program for rainbow trout and these meetings should continue until the desired result is achieved.
