The deputy director of research and technology of the Iranian Fisheries Science and Research Institute pointed out to the project of keeping and developing cobia brood fish in order to reproduce and produce larvae and juveniles, from which the resulting juveniles will be introduced to fish cages for cobia fish farming. He said: The project is being carried out by the fisheries researchers at the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea Ecological Research Institute, the results of which could have a significant impact on the jump in production. Dr. Mahmoud Hafezieh added: According to the latest statistics, Iran ranks fourth in terms of catching this fish species, but unfortunately no practical measures have been taken to breed and stock this fish in captivity. He continued: The amount of farming of this fish, according to the statistics published by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in 2016, was about 43 thousand tons per year, and Iran's share in the farming of this fish was unfortunately zero. Dr. Hafezieh believes: This fish species has a very fast growth in enclosed environments and is completely compatible with environmental conditions. Therefore, it can be a very suitable alternative for non - native fish such as Asian sea bass that have been introduced for cage fish farming. On the other hand, in our country, the cage fish farming industry is completely dependent on foreign countries to provide juvenile fish which are imported into the country at a high cost by the private sector. According to the official of the Iranian Fisheries Science and Research Institute, one of the important components of cage fish farming with the approach of using indigenous fish of the Persian Gulf is their high nutritional value and their suitability to the tastes of coastal residents and countries bordering the Persian Gulf. In addition, the availability of broodstock for annual larvae breeding and rearing, the high stocking density, the rapid growth and delicious fish filet as well as the high price of cobia, the needs of the fishing community and the efforts to rebuild fish stocks in the Persian Gulf are other factors influencing the selection of this fish for cage fish farming. Dr. Hafezieh stated: With the acquisition of the technique of developing cobia broodstock, breeding and rearing of the larvae and juveniles of cobia and its supply to aquaculturist for cage fish farming, the outflow of currency from the country will be prevented. He emphasized: With the mass production of cobia juveniles, a decent move will be made in the year of the jump in production in terms of job creation in coastal areas. The project could also help rebuild cobia fish stocks in the Persian Gulf. In addition, with the success of this project, its technical knowledge will be transferred to the private sector.
