On the occasion of World Fisheries Day, the second thinking meeting on the potential of the Golestan province in the sturgeon aquaculture industry was held in collaboration with the Society of Fisheries Science and the Faculty of Fisheries and Environmental Sciences. The meeting was held at the Persian Gulf Hall of the Faculty of Fisheries and Environmental Sciences with the presence of the university professors, the general manager of the office for rebuilding resources of aquatics of the Iran Fisheries Organization, the general manager of the Department of Fisheries of the province, the head of the Inland Waters Aquatic Stocks Research Center – Gorganand other experts. Highlights of the meeting include the potential of Golestan province in sturgeon breeding, rearing and harvesting sturgeons, the requirements of the sturgeon aquaculture industry, the domestic and international sturgeon market and its value - added products, and the challenges ahead of food production for the sturgeons (from larvae to broodfish). Fisheries said: One of the concerns of the officials of the Golestan province since 2015 is that the province should go out of a single product production (shrimp). He said about sturgeon farming in the Golestan province: This is being carried out in individual farms and complex farms as well as in four farms in Bandar Gaz, Kordkuy and Aliabad.Mr. Karami Rad, the general manager of the office for aquatic conservationand rebuilding resources, said: The existence of suitable climate for sturgeon farming, human resources, experience and technical knowledge of experts, the most valuable species of sturgeon in indigenous waters of Iran are the causes of development of sturgeon culture in the country. At the end, Mr. Karami Rad said: Golestan province, after Mazandaran and Gilan provinces, is in the third place in sturgeon farming by producing 54.5 tonnes of sturgeon meat and 0.2 tonnes of caviar.
