In order to review and evaluate the draft of the executive instruction for trawl fisheries management, a meeting hosted by the Iran Fisheries Organization and chaired by the deputy minister and the head of the Iran Fisheries Organization. The meeting was held at the meeting room of the Iran Fisheries Organization with the presence of Dr. Lahijan Zadeh, the deputy director of the marine environment and wetlands, Dr. Mahmoud Bahmani, the director of the Iranian Fisheries Science and Research Institute, Dr. Taghavi, the advisor to the director of the Iranian Fisheries Science and Research Institute, a group of deputies and the internal managers of the three organizations, dated 28 July 2019.Dr. Lahijan Zadeh emphasized the necessity and importance of fishery and aquatic resources management during the meeting and mentioned: In order to protect our aquatic resources, we need to strengthen our regulatory and executive tools, and we should consider this meeting as an opportunity for contemplation and synergy for aquatic resources management.Dr. Lahijan Zadeh added: It is essential that academic members and fisheries experts spend more time and energy in completing and presenting fisheries ideas. They should form a committee of experts and work on additional rules and guidelines to finalize it for approval.At the end, he announced the readiness of his organization to do so.Also, Dr. Khon Mirzaei, the deputy minister and the head of the Iran Fisheries Organization, after hearing expert opinions from the Iranian Fisheries Science and Research Institute and the Department of Environment as well as internal managers of the Iran Fisheries Organization, stated:We have committed ourselves to making environmental protection more of a priority in our fisheries development activities than ever before, and we will not develop any fisheries activities unless necessary investigations are made. It is good to turn this threat and sensitivity into an opportunity to help protect the environment as well. He added: Fishery is a part of environmental activities, and the constraints that exist in this field are of concern to us in terms of sovereignty and conservation of resources.Dr. Khon Mirzaei emphasized that the concerns of aquatic resources management and environmental protection are a common concern and said: We should seize opportunities to conduct ongoing studies and research. The deputy minister and the head of the Iran Fisheries Organization pointed to the experience of illegal and irresponsible sturgeon fishing in the past and lack of attention to the protection of sturgeon stocks and noted: Now we have to apply restrictions and strictures in order to manage the resources. Revocation of licenses is not a deterrent and the ambiguities need to be eliminated.Dr. Khon Mirzaei mentioned that our most important problem is the illegal fishing community because we do not have any information on their activity and extent of fishing, but unfortunately, most of our confrontation is with legal fishermen. He pointed out that the current penalties are not deterrent. He said: If anything is to be done, we have to consider all the issues and considerations expertly. The deputy minister and the head of the Iran Fisheries Organization said:Our colleagues at the Iranian Fisheries Science and Research Institute are highly regarded in many research projects and issues that concern the Department of Environment and as a strong executive research sector, they can contribute to studies and other activities related to the Department of Environment. At the end of the meeting, he urged attendees to study the overall environmental concerns in the guideline in order to eliminate ambiguities.
