The freshwater crayfish (Astacus leptodactylus) of Aras is one of the most economically important aquatic species in the Aras Dam Lake and for many years, freshwater crayfish have been exploited and exported by the companies licensed by the fisheries and aquatics management of the province. In order to evaluate the valuable resources of this economically important aquatic species, the Iranian Artemia Research Center conducted this important work with regard to the need for information on the amount of Astacus leptodactylus stocks in the Aras Dam Lake, the beginning of the fishery season and the annual catch permits. Based on the findings of the monitoring carried out in 2018-2019, fishery began with a delay of 15 days and was finished 20 days earlier. Due to the importance of the issue and the significant reduction in the fishery of this economically important aquatic species in the Aras Dam Lake, a joint meeting was held with the fisheries and aquatics management of the province. It was decided to conduct three stages of field survey in the Aras Dam Lake to determine the amount and the start time of fishery which the researchers of the center doubled the sampling stations and put more than 400 traps in the Aras Dam Lake from April 26 to April 29 for the fishery of freshwater crayfish of Aras. It should be noted that Astacus leptodactylus fishery has been decreasing since the 2000s, which started at 200 tons per year and dropped to 1.9 tons in 2018-2019.
