The head of the Iranian Artemia Research Center mentioned that the amount of Dunaliella in Lake Urmia reached 14.5 million algae per liter. In the interview with ISNA correspondent in the West Azerbaijan region, Dr. Nekoui Fard pointed out that the current level of the Lake Urmia is 1271.52 cm and is 77 cm higher than the level of the Lake Urmia in the same period last year. He added: The salinity of the Lake Urmia was 345 to 420 g / l in the same period last year, which is currently 120-150 g / liter. According to the study conducted last year, there were only Artemia eggs in the lake but due to rainfall in March and the improvement of the lake conditions due to releases to the body of water, the first Artemia nauplius larvae was observed between March 10 and March 20. All stages of the development of Artemia including the umbrella, nauplius, juvenile, and adult stage have been observed since April 21, which indicates the improvement of the ecological conditions of the Lake Urmia. Dr. Nekoui Fard stated: pH and salinity of the Lake Urmia are currently in good condition. The phytoplankton in the Lake Urmia has grown significantly compared to the same period last year. The head of the Iranian Artemia Research Center referred to the amount of Dunaliella in the Lake Urmia, and stated: The amount of Dunaliella in the same period last year was 2,405 algae per liter. According to the experiments carried out, the amount of Dunaliella has now reached 14.5 million algae per liter, suggesting that there is enough food to grow Artemia in the Lake Urmia. Dr. Nekoui Fard said that if the current trend in the Lake Urmia continues until the beginning of the hot seasons and if, according to the Lake Urmia recovery headquarters, 60 million cubic meters of water is released daily, a large population of Artemia will soon be seen in the Lake Urmia. Referring to the fact that there is now 0.1 matured Artemia per liter in the lake, the head of the Iranian Artemia Research Center said: Each Artemia in favorable conditions produces 54 nauplius larvae that produce 3 to 4,000 cysts during 3 months. If favorable conditions for lake water and appropriate salt concentration in the lake continue, the production of nauplius larvae will increase exponentially with the presence of matured Artemia in the lake which will soon result in good Artemia stock in the Lake Urmia. According to ISNA, unicellular algae are the most appropriate food for Artemia. The unicellular microalgae Dunaliella sp. lives on the coasts, rocky basins and Lake Urmia, and is one of the most saline-resistant species ever known. The Lake Urmia has 12 species of algae, among which Dunaliella sp. is the most saline-resistant species. Dunaliella blossoms and accumulates a strongly colored red-orange pigment called β-carotene at high temperatures, high light intensity and high salinity.
