This department is working on different fields of fishery research subjects: including seafood processing and preservation, molecular research on aquatic organisms and producing the biological products from aquatic organisms. This department has three specialized research groups as bellow:
Seafood Processing Research Group
The main activities of this research group are doing applied research on producing the new fishery products, new methods for seafood packaging, sea food standardization, seafood safety, food security, reducing the fish waste during processing, seafood handling, seafood preservation, using anon technology in seafood processing.
Biological Products Research Group
The main activities of this research group are focused on extraction and producing different bioactive materials and chemical components from aquatic organisms like drug components, food additives, industrial materials etc.
Molecular Genetics Research Group
The main activities of this research group are focused on collection, identification, classification and preservation of fisheries across the country (IRANIAN FISHERIES GENE BANK), preparation, reproduced, approval and maintains all types plasmids, genomic libraries, preparation and collection of aquatic and plasmid gene banks, domestic and international institutions and their proper maintenance in accordance with relevant regulations, monitoring and enforcing the regulations on bio safety issues associated with agriculture in the country, reviews and determine the guidelines to assess and manage the risks of GM fishery products, molecular genetic testing of seafood imports to verification of the status their pollution of demand concerned authorities, Identification of genes associated with quantitative traits in cellular organelles and tissues for use in aquaculture breeding.
